Why Modern Streetwear Can’t Compete With 90s Craftsmanship?

Streetwear has become an international trend.  To the people who were raised in the 90s, the present-day boom of mass-produced hoodies and small logos is superficial. Most fans agree that contemporary streetwear cannot compete with the rugged. Uncompromising fabrication of the 1990s. 

The central figure behind this discussion is Pelle Pelle. Which was not only part of 90s culture but also the benchmark for what a high-end urban lifestyle should look like.  This is why the streetwear of today can frequently never meet the standards of the craft of the 90s. 

1. The Excellence Of Material That Matters

The 90s style was represented by the legendary Pelle Picasso Jacket, which was multi-layered, appliquéd in leather, embroidered, and hand-set with rhinestones. These were not graphics but three-dimensional pieces of art that showcased the craft aspect of production.  

3. Structural Integrity And The Fit

Oversized bodies and garments characterized the street style of the 90s, yet oversized did not mean the garments were shapeless. They were heavy 2×2 in the rib cuffs and hems, a craft of that time to even out the garment’s structure despite a loose fit.

Contemporary boxy fits are unstable because they do not use internal features, such as high-quality satin underlinings or reinforced interior pockets, that brands like Pelle Pelle have developed. The 1990s were an era when the fashion was to make an appearance that drew attention; nowadays, the intention is to conform to the fashion. 

4. Cultural Authenticity 

The art of weaving is not just about sewing. It is about the spirit of the garment. The hip-hop movement was so entrenched in brands in the 1990s.  As Grandmaster Flash or 50 800 wore a studded leather jacket. It was a symbol of hustling and the coming of the urban culture. 

These jackets were streetwise, made to endure city life. Yet they appear high fashion. The trend of modern streetwear might replicate the image of the 90s. But it can’t endure that kind of lifestyle.
