These peaks are often accessed via established trekking paths. For example, the Everest Base Camp Trek route is taken for almost all Island Peak Climbing. This makes it a popular option to combine a classic trek and summit attempt in one trip. Likewise, the climb involves glacier travel, snowy slopes, and steep climbs. Island peak (6,189 meters) is one of the most climbed trekking peaks of Nepal. It provides breathtaking views of the Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse.
Similarly, the Lobuche East (6,119 meters) is another popular trekking peak of the Khumbu region. Lobuche East Peak Climbing is a bit more technical than Island peak, but it is still a beginner-friendly climb. From the summit, trekkers can witness the panoramic views of Pumori, Lhotse, and Everest.
Mera peak is the highest trekking peak of Nepal, with a height of 6,476 meters. Despite the altitude, Mera Peak Climbing is technically less demanding than both Island and Lobuche East peaks. The climb primarily consists of snow slopes and a few technical sections. Therefore, it is one of the most beginner-friendly peaks of Nepal. Technical Climbing Peaks In The Khumbu Region
Catering to the experienced climbers seeking adventurous high-altitude climbs, Khumbu is home to numerous challenging expeditions. These climbs include peaks above 6,500 meters or the ones that demand advanced climbing skills. Additionally, climbers need to be familiar with anchors, harnesses, carabiners, technical ice and rock, tools, crevasse rescue equipment, and much more.
Ama Dablam (6,812 meters) is one of the most rewarding technical peaks of the Khumbu region. It resembles the shape of Mount Matterhorn, located on the border of Switzerland and Italy. Therefore, it is also known as the “Matterhorn of the himalayas.” The Ama Dablam Expedition involves sharp ridges, rock and ice climbing, and numerous steep sections. Additionally, climbers spent about 12 days summiting the peak from the base camp. Therefore, the Ama Dablam expedition demands both physical and mental resilience.
Similarly, another of the most sought-after technical peaks of the Khumbu region is the Lobuche West (6,145 meters). Despite its elevation, it is classified as a proper expedition peak because of the technical difficulties and skills required. The peak has steep rocky and icy ridges and cornices. Additionally, Lobuche West Peak has a higher risk of natural hazards such as avalanches, crevasses, and rockfall than the trekking peaks. Peaks Above 8,000 meters
The Khumbu region offers the ultimate mountaineering challenge of summiting the highest and the fourth-highest mountains in the world, namely Mt. Everest (Sagarmatha) and Lhotse. The Everest Expedition is extremely challenging and requires the most advanced mountaineering skills.
Similarly, it involves crossing the Khumbu icefall, glacial valleys, and sharp exposed ridges. In addition to that, climbers face high altitude, harsh weather, and icy and rocky sections. So, they should have previous mountaineering experience and be familiar with advanced climbing tools. Such as rope work, ice axe, ladder crossing, high-altitude camping, glacier travel, crevasse rescue, ascenders, and belay devices, among others. From the top of the world, climbers can see the surrounding peaks such as Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu.
Even though the Lhotse Expedition is slightly lower than Everest, it is a highly technical climb. It consists of steep ice faces, sharp ridges, and glacial valleys. Moreover, Lhotse and Everest share 80% of the route, so most climbers combine these two expeditions. The summit of Lhotse flaunts the 360° panorama of the himalayas. Sacred And Unclimbed Peaks
There are multiple peaks in the Khumbu region that hold cultural, spiritual, and religious significance. Therefore, the local communities consider them sacred mountains and are off-limits to climbers out of respect for their beliefs and traditions. People believe Khumbila (5,761 meters) guards the Khumbu Valley and call it the “God of the Khumbu.” Hence, the Khumblia ascent is strictly prohibited.
